New technologies and the pricing of radiotherapy services: an open issue in the different Regions. The situation in Piedmont and Aosta Valley

Authors

Introduction: In this paper we have analysed the problems relating to pricing in radiotherapy, bearing in mind the increase in high-tech, high-cost services in recent years. Methodology: After a brief history of the evolution of the national tariff nomenclature, the situation in Piedmont and Valle D'Aosta was assessed, with the relevant legislation that introduced and modified the nomenclature and tariff over time. Results: Over the years, only a few Regions have adopted changes to their nomenclator, in different ways, incorporating new technologies and new clinical practices. In Oncology, it has been argued that with management by pathology, resources could be better allocated according to specific strategies aiming to achieve certain results, both in terms of health and in economic terms. (Paderni, 2014) Conclusion: An overall judgement on the clinical appropriateness of using a specific radiotherapy modality in that particular patient is needed, taking into account the efficacy of the treatment, the comparison with other available ones and also the cost (clinical and economic). A review of the charging modalities could avoid waste and simplify the procedure.
